An Idiot's Guide to: The City [Version 1.1]

Hey there, newcomer. First things first, I've got to say the obligatory "Welcome to the City". By now, you're probably wondering one of three questions.

1) Where am I?
2) What's going on?
3) What the hell is that ticking?

We've all been there before, so let me try and help by clearing a few things up for you.

This place is known only as 'The City'. Yes, that's it's name. It hasn't ever been given an official name, so everyone refers to it as such.

Okay, so you know the not!name of this place. You're probably wondering where exactly this is. A country, at least.

Unfortunately, that isn't something I can tell you because it doesn't exist. This city is a place unto itself. I know it sounds like something out of a B-movie, but this city functions as a nexus. It's a gathering point for people from all worlds, all universes, all dimensions, and all timeframes. We have no control over who gets in, and even less over who gets back out.

Yes, that means you're stuck here, unfortunately. Ways home open up spontaneously. We have very little control over their existence. And most people seem to believe that the harder you go looking for a way home, the less likely you are to find one.

There are no planes, trains, cars, spaceships, boats, portals, or spells that can get you back home. Go too high up, and you'll come crashing back down to the ground. Go too far out to sea, and you'll be heading back inland. Really, you're not going anywhere unless the City lets you leave.

That ticking? It's a permanent feature of the City, but one that can be subdued by finding yourself some company. So step to it. You're going to need it by the time you get through all this.

The ticking comes from the City itself. Or more precisely, a clock mechanism that resides underneath it all. Its purpose is supposedly as a countdown to the apocalypse. DON'T PANIC. There hasn't been any proof that this is really true. It may well just be another scare tactic by the Deities.
